A Brief Return of XTC

0
0
This one was set to me after the XTC deluge was completed, but it is so exhaustive that huge fans of
the band will want it as well....."Coat of Many Cupboards"is a 4-disc set of demo, live tracks, alternate takes and whatever else they could find.......not a LOT more, really, that I can say about XTC, I'll just offer up the track list with the note that these are FLAC files so are a bit larger than other MP3's or whatever, if you find them too large, there are free converters online (FLAC files are better sound quality, but MP3's etc are more manageable, whatever is best for you)......thanks to Spider fo sending me this......

Saw the Black Keys and Cage the Elephant last night with my son Grant, awesome, powerful show.....I've enjoyed the Black Keys since their debut album, they really didn't touch on much of their old tunes (exception: a great "Leaving Trunk"), but still great music.....Cage the Elephant, on the other hand, I am much less familiar with......they REALLY put out live, the singer reminds me of Eddie Vedder as hard as he works on stage, a dynamic live act.......really a great show, welcome back to OHIO Black Keys! If I can find a copy of the show online I'll post it (I like having copies of shows I attend for some goofy reason).

Also best of luck in the 2014 season to the Minnesota Vikings, taking on the Rams tomorrow.....I think for the first time in several seasons they are on the right track and should be a handful by about 2016.

And one MORE thing....I don't know what is wrong with the "Very Sticky Fingers" disc by Mott....this is weird, it plays fine, I Tunes recognizes it fine, but for some reason I can't RAR it....I'm going to try doing each track individually, see if that works, if not, I'll have to copy the disc and try again......be patient, I've had a couple of people comment on it, sorry.

THANKS to everyone who reads, listens, contributes, or even just visits here......YOU are what the
blog is about, NOT me.....it's about sharing what we have, and sharing our lives........it's a community, rather than a stodgy blog that feels it is superior to everyone else (TRUST ME they exist)......with footbal season starting, I may not get to tell you guys how much I appreciate you that I truly do.....but, REALY I do, you are the life blood of this project! Thanks 1000x over!

Fearless Flush Sampler

A forgotten punk sampler (at least I had forgotten it) from 1997, lots of obscure and amatuerish punk sounds......hey if you are familiar with Glu Gun, Chuck, Dead Lazlo's Place, 30 Foot Tall, and the others here, you've got a better memory than my own.....what is pretty cool is most of these acts are represented by multiple tracks, which, of course serves to "paint a more complete picture" of the bands.......don't miss Strung Out's "Season of the Witch".....

I will see how this is recieved I have a ton of these punk comps loaded with unknowns, maybe not for everyone, but we'll see how this one goes down.

Sweet Water

One of the second/third string grunge bands that followed Nirvana, Pearl Jam, AIC, Screaming Trees,
et al., out of Seattle in the ealy 1990's with the added twist of a reasonably legitimate comeback, seriously "post-wave".

Sweet Water were bassist Cole Peterson, guitarist Rich Credo, drummer Paul Uhlir, and singer Adam Czeisler.......in the initial grunge era, they released a few albums reminiscent of, say, Mother Love Bone or Green River, fans of the classic early 90's Seattle grunge sound (like myself) may enjoy the vintage releases that I have here (Note: I do NOT have the difficult to locate "Ter" from 1992, I think I have heard it but not sure, anyone with a copy to share I would be thrilled to hear from), "Sweet Water" from 1993 (highlights: "Crawl" and "Sleep", remember the Seattle bands' fondnss for one-word tiles?), and the similar "Superfriends" from 1995 (Standout tracks: "Cake  and Strychnine", "No Syrup For Your Pancakes")......

All of which would add  to a fairly undistingushed career, other than this very odd career pattern : in 2009 (!), after several years of hiatus from recording/performing, they released what at least I consider to be thier bestrk, "Clear theTarmac"......really, a surprisingly hard rocking and really listenable album. Sounds like 1996-2008 never even happened, a fine, retro-90's sounding effort, complete with the short song titles ("Rock Steady", "Stereo"), this is something of a "retro-classic" if that is even the proper terminology......

Not TERRIBLY familiar, see what ya think about the older efforts, as well as"Clear the Tarmac", anyone jonesing for some classic-sounding Grunge, here be a small bit of it at least!

Always trying to keep it varied, we'll see what I have up next.....taking a SMALL break from the BIG projects (Mott, Riot Grrrls, XTC) for a few days, but there ARE several more in the pipeline!

Motorhead Part 1

0
0
OK, Motorhead....perhaps you don't like em? Well, tough shit, cause I DO......for one they were the
absolute LOUDEST fucking band I ever experienced live (not even close, the Who, Iron Maiden, the Stooges really should all hang their heads in shame compared to Motorhead from an extreme LOUDNESS standpoint......

Motorhead were more or less the playground of bassist/vocalist Lemmy Kilmister, and at thier peak, drummer Philthy Animal Taylor, and Guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke, although they have encompased several other members, basically this is Lemmy's joint.....Loud, fast, obnoxious, that is Motorhead....I have referred to MANY other bands that I love as "joke bands", at least partially so: Blue Oyster Cult, the Dictators, Wolfmother, Soundgarden, and others, bands that may OR BE NOT casting a wink and giving a chuckle to the "fans" of said band....myself, I could giver 3/8 of a fuck, as Motorhead rock the motherfucking house, always hve, and always will.....you don't like em? Sorry bout your luck, go find a blog who is posting the greatest (ha ha) of Journey or something.

Motorhead rocks it hard core, 100% ampheamine rage, basically every song sounds a LOT like the
last one, but SO FUCKING WHAT? Motorhead are one of the GREAT crash and burn bands of our time, and i am THRILLED that I got to see them live once, not kidding here, this is a serious experienc seeing these boyos live...loud Loud LOUD and that is all I can say about it.....they set out to so something, and they fucking DO IT.......here is my Motorhead collection.....you don't dig this shit? Sorry about your luck, but this is ROCK N ROLL, I love it, always have and always will....loud, fast, sweaty, ugly....for certain, they all sound a LOT alike, but for the uninititated, please check out the wonderful live "No Sleep til Hammersmith", bout as close as we can get to the "live" Motorhead experience......"Ace of Spades"and "Iron Fist" are also albums you may dig should you be ready to dive into THIS genre!........part 2 tomorrow, either ya LOVE IT, or ya HATE IT, either way, it is all it promises to be: loud, fast, ugly........motherfucking MOTORHEAD, a favorite band of mine..rock on if ya like it, if ya don't all I can say is, well, FUCK OFF, right???????

Motorhead Part 2

OK here is some more of my Motorhead stash, really, what good would it do to go into a hell of a lot of detail on these? Ya KNOW what they sound like! They sound a LOT like the ones I posted yesterday, these pick up in 1995, going through more recent years, and of course there are a smattering of rarities and such coming tomorrow (betcha can probably guess what THEY sound like!)......phenominal response to the first part of this one, I am OFTEN surprised one way or the other as to how popular these are going to be.....but glad to be of service, as Motorhead rocks the fuck out and always has! No question, if I ever hear a LOUDER band than when I saw them in 1981-2 or so, it will likely be fatal!

Well, OK, I will clean off my Motorhead shelf today......once again, I have very little intention of waxing poetic about the Motorhead legacy...it's loud, it's fast, it's brutal, it's fucking UGLY and I love every Goddamn second of it......Motorhead, ironically, were a UNIQUE band, in that they were LOUDER, HARDER, FASTER than ANYONE, almost (ALMOST but not quite) to the point of being self-satiric)....Motorhead were/are the shit, the REAL fucking deal, thanks mostly to resident  "genius" Lemmy whose fingerprints were all over Hawkwind (great), the Pink Fairies (great), maybe even the Deviants (not sure, but STILL GREAT)......so anyway, here is the REST of my Motorhead shit.....download it if ya want, but if ya do, PLEASE FUCKING PLAY IT SUPER LOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUD..........THAT is fucking Motorhead, taken seriously or not IT DOES NOT MATTER, NOT in the fucking LEAST......GET IT? I am thrilled/happy/whatever that these have been as popular as they have been , I swear to GOD I just never know........but so goes this shit........here is the rest of my Motorhead stuff......rarities, etc, are included in  THIS post, so have at it.......MOTORHEAD forever, MOTHAFUCKAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tool, Part 1

0
0
I am pretty excited about this one, Tool is one of my very favorites, gloom-rocking, artistic metal
geniuses of the1990's-early 2000's, taking Nine Inch Nails' self-loathing hatred and combining it with some absolutely stunning artsy-metal, I think they were GREAT, wonderful, and I mised their concert here because of it's scheduled date: September 11, 2001......what are ya gonna do? I've seen videos of their live shows and they are disturbing and incredible, their videos are freakish, and they are/were one brilliant and incredible band.......a perfect representative of the era from whence they came......the basc lineup was singer Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones, bassist Justin Chancellor, and drummer Danny Carey.......if you are unfamiliar and are a fan of ANY "gloom rock", OR of any metal, you are doing yourself a disservice if Tool is not in heavy rotation......there ain't much bad the Big Boy can say about them, they have not made a truly bad album and HAVE released a couple of essential classics.....they also have spawned the (featured here, long, long ago) A Perfect Circle, who are/were great, as well as Pucsifer, basically Maynard's solo project, which I may or may not tack onto the end of this post, depending on the response.

OK, Tool......formed in LA in 1990, this was something different, in my view, right away.....downright frightening material, set to a "different" kind of metal, structured, really, somewhat like classical music (IMO) with "movements",etc, in thier amazing long pieces.......bottom line, I have loved Tool from the minute I first heard them, today we will present their "proper" releases, and then in part 2 we will get to the live stuff and rarities......also, I need your input.....shall we do a "part 3" with Pucsifer? It is YOUR call......a few years ago I was in Jerome, Arizona, where Maynard lives  or at least lived then, and there was a bizarre store there which specialized in selling Pucsifer material.....strange but true (Jerome AZ is what used to be a mining town, it's pretty amazing to visit, whether or not the Pusicfer thing is still there or not)....

OK, how about the music? Well, the early EP's, "72826" and "Opiate" are essential, wonderful
previews of what was to come......"72826" includes early versions of the classics "Sober" and "Crawl Away", while "Opiate" is great as well, giving us a couple of fine live tracks, notably "Jerk Off" and "Cold and Ugly".....I cannot say enough about the greatness of even these early EP's, if you are unfamiliar, THIS IS BAND YOU NEED TO KNOW......a MUCH more "metal" Nine Inch Nails? With the artistic allusions of, God knows who? This was an INCREDIBLE bnd, one whom I think will be more appreciated in the future than they are in thier own time (it happens)

OK, the first full length is the five-star classic "Undertow" (1993)......an absolutely brilliant album, I don't know if my words cn do it any justice.....suffice to say that "Prison Sex", "Sober""Bottom" and "Crawl Away" are ALL masterpieces, the rest of the album is great as well, and it is 1000% essential.

It was followed up with "Aenima", as good as "Undertow" and more creative (!), there is amazing stuff here: "Pushit", "Stinkfist", "Hooker With a Penis", "Die eir Von Satan".....a truly terrifying and brilliant album, along with "Undertow" ABSOLUTELY to of the best releases of the decade of the 90's, which, frankly, is high praise as a LOT of fine music was coming out around this time.

The EP "Salival" was released in 2000, it is essential as well, in partcular the phenominal live version of "Pushit".....an essential listen as well....I realize this is a "fan" talking, but this was simply an AMAZING band.

In 2002 they released "Laterallus", which sounds to me, a bit less "gloomy" and a bit more "Angry", and it works absolutely perfectly....."Laterallus" is brilliant as well, I'll say 4.5 stars, there is GREAT SHIT all over this disc ("Mantra", "Parabol", "Parabola", and especially the fab "Ticks and Leeches" ("Hope this is what you wanted....hope this is what you had in mind....'cause this is what you're GETTING".........brilliant lyric).......this is also an essential, tremendous, an fantastic album, one of the best of ITS decade as well

The final (as of now) "official" release was 2006's "10,000 Days", which I would personally call their weakest full length, maybe clocking in at 4 stars......trust me, it's only a "weak" release in comparison to the earlier ones, in fact, it is brilliant as well in it's own right.......

OK kids, that is all yer uncle is gonna put up for tonight.......in a day or 2 we will get to the meat of
this, the demos, the rarities, the live shows and all, but as you may be able to see, this is a favorite modern day band of mine......so I have already DONE A Perfect Circle (I'm sure the links are dead by now), but if you want some more material of this ilk, please TELL ME you'd like to see the Puscifer stuff as well (I have a good bit) and we'll pop that up also.......Tool is one of my very favorite bands of the latter-day era, I find them to be amazingly creative, innovative, frightening, and motherfucking HARD ASS ROCKING......GREAT band.......let me know what you think, I don't see Tool on the blogs a lot, why? I don't know, but here's a starter set for the novices.....Got lots and lots of live/rare/demo stuff, I HOPE you guys wanna hear it, it would disappoint yer uncle tremendously if you don't appreciate a phenominal band like Tool!

OK, fuckers......this shit is BAD FUCKING ASS......maybe you are too old to have been there, or too
young to have been there, but this is ONE OF THE GREATEST BANDS EVER, I am not fucking joking......I will gauge the response and see how far I delve into this (Puscifer), but for God's sake, PLEASE check the next post which is BLOATED with demos, live shows, rarities, and all THAT good shit.......Tool were the motherfucking SHIT and deserve our respect if we claim to love TRULY demented ROCK N FUCKING ROLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tool, Part 2

0
0
So, I gather we all agree that Tool are/were badass, artistic, intellectual metal monsters who cannot be
compared to anyone (except perhaps Opeth, whom they are/were FAR superior to)....we went through thier studio catolouge yesterday just in case you've been in suspended animation for the last 20 years and are unfamiliar, today, we get to the meat of the issue......Tool, live shows, demos, rarities, and all THAT good shit.......I said this yesterday, but I think Tool is destined to be one of those bands (think maybe the Velvet Underground, the New York Dolls, The MC5, a few others) who will not be fully appreciated for thier greatness until maybe 20 years down the road......these classic albums will stand up forever, and the brilliance of this more rare material is unquestionable as well.....seriously, I think Tool are one of the greatest of all American rock bands, ever, and I think that in the future, we will appreciate that.....timeless, brilliant music, maybe a "Velvet Underground of the 1990's-2000's" if that makes a bit of sense to ya at all!

So, if you are a Tool fan in the first place, you had all the stuff I put up yesterday......but I had to do it, ya know, a couple of non-argueable CLASSIC albums, some just-short of classic discs, and some damn fine EP's as well......if you are a newb, my God, I can only imagine what you thought....so, anyway, today, we are going to bombard you with the "rest" of my Tool stash, and still, I ask for opinions on whether you wish for me to continue with Maynard's solo project Puscifer, which is interesting at the VERY least.......let me know......

OK, so what can the Big hombre pull out for the discriminating Tool fan? Well, we have a smattering here, let's see........too bad the live shows don't come with visuals as thier concerts are pretty intense, visually,, but so it goes......OK, let s crack open the vault......

Let's start with "Ultra Rare Trax", not sure how "ultra rare" they are, but for sure, it is some bad ass Tool, and that is what we are here for today.....this includes a lot of silly covers (Sublime's "Wrong Way", Paul McCartney's "Silly Love Songs", etc......), as well as a generous handful of demos and stuff.......might as well start here, Tool neophytes!

Next up we have a very recent discovery of mine, a remixed "Aenima"......Tool's long, complex
compositions lend themselves well  to remix techniques, and this is a surprisingly good album...please check this out, it is worthwhile.

"Tool Oddities" contains all KINDS of weird shit, demos, remixes, live cuts, and tandems with other bands, notably Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit......lots of stuff for the discriminating fan, and a lot of WEIRD stuff, basically for the rest of ya!

"The Tool Shed Demos" (1991) is a fine collection of early versions os some of thier best work, such as "Sober" and "Crawl Away", I think it is fairly rare, fans of the band will REALLY want this one.

Got several live shows, it is unfortunate, as I've said before, that they are not DVD's, because the Tool experience is a good part visual......let's start with a 2006 2-disc show from Vancouver, a perfectly professional rundown through a good bit of thier best stuff ("Stinkfist", "Schism", lots more).

Also from 2006, we have a Rosemont show, 2 discs as well, and  very similar setlist...a good version of "Wings For Marie" highlights this set.

We have a single disc, undated set from a Coachella show, a bit older obviously, as it focusses on the great "Undertow" and "Aenima" material......a fine version of "Prison Sex" highlights the show, "Sober" and "Stinkfist" are here as well in a compelling performance.

Also undated is a NYC show, single disc, but obviously "Aenima" era or so......their finest live number, in my estimation, was always "Pushit" which is here is all it's ugly glory.

Again undated, we have a set from Houston from around the same time, similar set list, "Prison Sex" and "Pushit" are great, and the encore "Sober" brings it all home.

OK, one more....1996 Washington DC.....this is a good single disc set, featuring "Pushit" as well as "Crawled Away", "Hooker With a Penis", and "Bottom".......a great set, from a great fucking band.

Last and by FAR the strangest is "Lullabye Renditions of Tool", the title says it all, strange, strange, strange, but that's what I be here for, right?

One of my very favorite modern day bands as you may have ascertained.......great and brilliant band,
for further listening, check A Perfect Circle whom I profiled here long ago, and if interested, PLEASE inform me that you would like a post on Puscifer, it's kind of an acquired taste, but is rewarding......but I need to know.....you guys want a Puscifer post or not? It's "Tool-Lite", but it is damn interesting at times as well, so PLEASE comment and let me know your preference......but, I will tell you, that post 1990, VERY few bands, I think, have been as great, hard rocking, significant, and thought provoking as have been Tool.........tremendous band, underappreciated for now, but as i said earlier, in the future they WILL be appreciated as influential and brilliant, when the Nicklecrack shit the kiddies are listening to will be relegated to the garbage heap of history.

OK, guys.....I put a bit O work into this and I know you will LUUUUUUV it, it's the shit.......any interest in Puscifer, or should I move on to something else? your call....If I get just ONE VOTE one way or the other, that is the way it shall go, so each opinion is REALLY important!

Tool is/was the fucking bomb.........bad ass, heavy, scary, dark, bleak, artistic, intellectual...what more could ANYONE ask?

Puscifer

0
OK, as a supplement to the Tool stuff, here we have what I can offer up of Puscifer......as you can
probably tell I am a huge fan of most of Tool's work, Puscifer, which is a side project of Maynard James Keenan, not quite as much, and if you are expecting "Tool, Jr.", be prepared to be quite wrong....Puscifer is Maynard and probably 50 differentbacking musicians at different times, and specialize in synth-heavy, beat driven wierdness, about 180 degrees from Tools thunderous gloom rock......I don't think I have everything as there are tons of remixes and the like, but I have what I have and have recieved quite a few emails requesting this.......so here we go with wht I do have, if you have anything to add, please do so.

Earliest release I find is the goofball, countryish "Cuntry Boner" b/w "World Up My Ass", titles pretty much tell the tale here....a few months later came the first EP came out later the same year (2007) with the title "Don't Shoot the Messenger", highlighted by the "Renholder" remix of "The Undertaker", heavy bass/synth and pretty cool if you favor this sort of thing.

Finally MJK released a full length, "V Is For Vagina", this is a really decent album of soulful electronica, highlighted again by the full-out assault of "The Undertaker", also the dark "Momma Sed" and the quite bizarre "Dozo".......lots of guest musicians stand out here, very much worthwhile if you are up for something "different" (can't wait for someone to blindly dive into these looking for a Tool-like bludgeoning).

"D Is For Dubby" is also a strong effort, taking some of the "V" material, stripping the vocals and
intensifying the music with lots of dub techniques......dub fans will maybe like it, again, some may find it too strange for their tastes.

You won't beleive this, but next up is "V Is For Viagra the Remix Album", once again taking earlier numbers and remixing them into sometimes almost unrecognizeable versions. One thing about MJK he gets plenty of mileage out of his material.......me, I hapen to like this one as well, considering the three albums as companion pieces and excellent party/background music for the discerning oddball.

Next up, the EP "C Is For (Please Insert Sophomoric Genetilia Reference Here)" contains what I think maybe the best Puscifer track, "The Mission (M Is For Milla Mix)", really works well.....one thing that IMO DOESN'T work especially well is the odd "The Humbling River", not a BAD track by any means but actually might have been more at home on one of A Perfect Circle's albums......not to nitpick or anything, obviously this guy plays by his own rules.

2010's "Sound Into Blood Into Wine" is a soundtrack album to a Puscifer documentary, containing material mostly previously available , however, I think if you simply wish to dabble, it actually might be the way to go as it contains some of the best stuff ("The Mission", "the Undertaker", even "World Up My Ass".

I know a couple of "true believers", much more knowledgeable about Puscifer than myself,  who
REALLY rally behind "Conditions of My Parole" (2011), as the best release the "band" has put out, I'd find it hard to argue the point......some fine vocal work from guest Carina Round interplay well with MJK, some really fine, haunting, and intense tracks ("The Rapture", "Toma", "Man Overboard"), I'd really have to agree that it is probably the best Puscifer release.

"Donkey Punch the Night" came out just last year, I am not crazy about it, covers of (I am not making this up) "Balls to the Wall" and (cough) "Bohemian Rhapsody" (I'll let THAT one sink in for a moment), and if THAT isn't enough, both of them appear as well in remixed versions.......well, odd to be certain at least.

When my Mother was living, we used to visit her in Arizona each year, and often my wife and I would leave our son with Grandma for a few days and go spend some couple time up in Prescott.....near Prescott is the town of Jerome, which is an amazing place to visit, an old mining town that is up in the mountains, lots of tourists visit there, but it is quite cool.....evidently, MJK lives there as well, and (at least last time we were there, probably 5 years ago or so), there was a store dedicated to all things Puscifer (not just CD's and the like but clothing, etc)......the register was manned by one of the freakiest looking females I have yet to see, and coming from me, that is saying something, I bet this babe had 50 piercings and 20 tattoos on her face alone, had the Mrs not been along I might have asked to check out the rest, but God knows, this babe might have PREFERRED the Mrs......anyway, I digress.......the store was very cool, and, if you've ever been there, Jerome simply seems like a place where Maynard James Keenan OUGHT to live, for some reason. I think I bought "V is for Vagina" there, and maybe some earrings or something.......anyway, it IS a cool store (if it's still there), and if you are ever in central Arizona, I recommend checking out Jerome, and the Puscifer store for a day.

Obviously not the type of stuff I generally post, but a companion piece to the Tool stuff, and I've been keeping things a little on the heavy side of late anyway (not that there's anythign wrong with THAT), but maybe I've been wavering from the "variety" of which I tout so much, this should at least put us back on the right track there.

Love to hear from Tool fans who were unfamiliar with this, how surprised were you? would an
accurate comparison be Tool/Sex Pistols=Pusicfer/PIL? I don't know, maybe I could come up with  a better one, but this is interesting stuff, MJK is obviously quite creative, and let me know what you think of these, please! I would about guarentee there are a bunch more remixes and etc of this stuff out there, but this is all I've got.

Real quick like, another grunge anthology

Better than the one I put up a couple of weeks ago, which had so much "obvious" material it seemed like one of those 1970's K-Tel collections, this one ("The Grunge Years 1991") has at least a bit more obscure material than that one did......the obligatory Nirvana track is not really an obvious one ("Dive"), and we get some stuff from Tad, Dickless, The Walkabout, and Love Battery, among other "second team" grunge acts of that great year of 1991........by no means a great album as we look at it today, but sometime in the future, as I've said before, I think these grunge comps may be the equivelant of "Nuggets" if you get what I mean.....not going to go into any detail at all on this but for grunge-rock enthusiasts, it is probably at least "semi" essential, unless of course, you already have all of it......

A wonderful set this evening, can't remember from where I got it, back in the day I was collecting psych comps from various blogs almost daily, honestly don't recall the source for this one.....the full title is "Psychedelic Portugal-Hard Psych and Prog from the Portugal Underground Psych Scene, 1968-74"......if you are a fan of foreign language (only some of it, some is English) psych/prog, this is a fairly unknown gem that you will want to attack. Just gave it a refresher listen today, it's a REALLY good one and comes with my highest recommendation for this type of thing......if you scan the track/artist listing, there may not be anything that jumps out at you, but "A Story" by Ex- Libris is a real winner, "Stand By" from Pop Music Five, Inc, echoes the great Nuggets garage psych sound, The Heavy Band (!) contributes "Funky", The Chinchillas "Barbarella" is a standout, hell it's all great, can't beleive I've never popped this one up before when I was in one of those moods where I didn't want to do much work.........seriously, this is a keeper......

Lemme know your thoughts, I have another Portugal set, a multi-disc "Nuggets" type thing that I might dig out soon if the Portugal thing goes over well......

Portugese Nuggets

Staying in the Portugal groove for another day, here is a fine 4 disc set of "Nuggets"-style garage/psych/surf, most of which I assume will be little known to the English speaking listener (although, like yesterday's set, some are in English)........a few acts are repeaters from yesterday's "Heavy Psych" set, the time frame is a bit earlier (this hit the "Nuggets" era squarely, 1964-69"), lets see what we have here....

Volume 1 includes the fab Pop Music Five Inc, this time wth the cool "Fire". Os Chinchillas treat us to "I'm a Believer"......Quarteto 1111 are a repeater from yesterday, this time with "Bissaide"......I also need to touch on Os Bluesos Negroes, just because I think the name is amusing........  wonderful, different, out there stuff......fans of both foreign language (non-English, I mean), as well as fans of Nugget-rock should jump on these, myself I am in both camps....

Couple of bands get multiple play on Volume 2, Shieks, Os Steamers........worth a laugh: Os Vodkas "San Francisco Girls".......each volume of the set is a treasure, truly, don't miss a one.

Volume 3 includes, Demonious Negroes, gotta love that, couple cool tracks from Conjunto Hi-Fi.....what does "Conjunto" mean in Portugese? Because, along with the previously mntioned Conjunto Hi-Fi, we also get Conjunto Zoo, Conjunto Night Stars, and Conjunto Acedemico Joao Paulo.....one of the things I like about non-English language stuff is the mystery of stuff like that!

The fab Quarteto 1111 highlight Volume 4, yet another "Conjunto" band, this time Conjunto Jose Novoa (with "House of the Rising Sun"!), Os Chincillas return, as do Os Demonios Negroes (sorry, I can't help it, I assume "The Black Demons", am I correct?).........another fine collection.

It would be WAAAAY cool if someone who speaks/reads Portugese would translate the band names and song titles, mostly because I assume some of them would be funny, but it isn't IMPORTANT.....the best thing about foreign language rock is it allows the music to do the talking (at least to we narrow-minded Yanks), and really allows the nuances of the genre (think also the Greek Punk sets, I've GOT to get a few more of those sent for translation).......anyway, this should keep ya buy for a little while, enjoy the last couple of days'"Portu-fest"!

I've been doing this for a while and I just WANT TO KEEP IT FRESH AND INTERESTING, not just for ME, but for YOU GUYS.........please contribute your music, as well as your opinions, and let's keep this blog what it is, which is NOT a stodgy, superior, better-than-thou blog (trust me they exist), but a
COMMUNITY of people who LOVE the music that has served as a background to our lives......love you all, really, and you don't need to tell me the Vikings (as well asOhio State) suck, I am FULLY aware of those facts!

Thanks to all who participate here, it's all about YOU (not me).....even though, yeserday (9/20) was my anniversary (1 Year) of nearly dying in a freaky sleep-apnea incident.......just glad to be alive, as we all should be, but we need background music for our lives while we are above ground......that is what I AM here for!! Utilize the chance!

7x7 Is (Part 2)

The final three discs of the magnficent "7 x 7 Is" set, with tons of GREAT garage
rock singles (more of recent vintage in case you are wondering, doesn't matter, it's fucking kickass anyways, get over the prejudice of recently vintaged garaeg rock, it's fucking awesome).....

So, disc 5 leads off with a GREAT band I haver profiled here before, 1313 Mockingbird Lane, who, as you know (if you follow this fucking blog as you should) are tremendous, also the Cynics, The Gorehounds, the Kings of Oblivion, and MORE.......this is a great series, feel sorry for ya if you're one of the losers that contacts me a year from now, asking for a re-up (likely you won't get it).

Now, we have Disc 6........highlighted by the immortal Roky Erickson (& 27 Devils Joking) as well as the immortal Yard Trauma, this maight just be the best of the seven discs.......we also get some lesser-knowns as Psycho Desert Rangers, The Bags, and Dana Lynn, no question, something you want on your shelf (along with the other 6 discs of course)......

Finally Disc 7, the final of the series (ya know, I don't recall from where I got these, but, truly, they have the immortal  Katrakyla written ALL OVER them).......noone really well-known here but overs of garage-rock aren't going to wish to miss out on the New Duncan Imperials, Mooseheart Faith, The Wicked Ones, and more.....this is the "set completer" and is as good as the rest of the discs......

Hope you guys have enjoyed THIS series, it's long been a favorite of mne, and at least I think, is somewhat hard to run accross......so here it is.......this is modern day garage rock at its best, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don't check these out.

See ya, God only knows what I may put up next? Please let me know of any rockin sounds you'd like
to hear, I have barely scratched the surface of my stash in these 3.5 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morningwood

0

Morningwood released one wonderful semi-classic perid piece of tremenedous, danceable, alterna-
pop in the ealy 2000's, pretty much sank without much fanfare.......I thought it was REALLY good, they were little-girl voiced Chantel Claret, bassist Pedro Yanowitz, as well as touring/semi members guitarists Will Tendy and Jeremy Asbrock, and drummer Jonathon Schmidt......a pure New York City creation, that first self -titled album is one you need to seek out (like, HERE!), it's a forgotten (to a point) fine collecton of silly alt-pop, such as "Take Off Your Clothes", "Jet Setter""NU Rock", as well as the fabulous "New York Girls" and the single of the year, whatever year that was (2000?), "Nth Degree" (I once heard Chantel's charming  little voice in background of a car commercial with a snippet of the song, which happened to her spelling out "M-o-r-n-i-n-g-w-o-o-d".....figured auto industry exec finally figured out what "Morningwood"actually meant, because I never saw the commercial again......anyway, I hope they made a ton of cash off that commercial, doubt they made THAT much off the musical career thing......

Because, the followup, "Diamonds and Studs" came out a year or two later.....and then the "Stuff" was gone GOODBYE like a shot off the bat of Jose Bautista.........it's not HORRIBLE, but listen and compare and you'll see what I mean.....some decent tracks worth hearing once or twice ("Bipolar Bear", "Snobby Little Elf", "Hot Tonight" and "Bitches" are all fine, but the magic, for me, was gone)........check it out, see you agree or not.....myself I rate album 1 3.5 stars, the follw up 2 stars......disagree? I used to have a fine XM Live broaadcast of one of thier shows and searched everywhere for i today. I may have loaned it out or something, anyone with a copy of it (ca. 2001 on XM Radio) please share a copy, it's quite good!

Ian Dury

0
0
Ian Dury was born the the same year as my father (!), 1942, hacked around the UK for a while before
gaining some notoriety in the 1970's punk/new wave scene, most notably as leader of Ian Dury & the Blockheads. To describe the Blockhead's sound would be somewhat difficult, as they blended reggae, rock, funk, soul, and Dury's love of music hall stuff......he compiled his initial lineup out of drummer Charley, bassist Norman Watt-Roy, keyboardist Mick Gallagher, guitarist John Turnbull, and saxaphonist Davey Payne......it took a while for the band to find a lable, finally landing at the most obvious place all along, of course, Stiff Records.

The resultant release is one of the semi-forgotten semi-classics of the era,"New Boots and Panties",  the great singles "Hit Me With Your Rythm Stick" and "Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll" are the standouts, other great stuff here, such as "What a Waste" and "Superman's Big Sister" and more a solid 3.5 to 4 star release as this is something of an aquired taste.

The next release was "Do it Yourself", a double disc which I would consider his best work by far, this one actually creditted to the Blockheads and not just to Ian........great stuff: "Inbetweenies", "Waiting For Your Taxi", "Sink My Boats" and PLENTY more, that is just Disc 1......Disc 2 has some fun demos, live cuts, alternate takes......I recommend the entire package if you wish simply dabble, this is where you'd wanna start.

He released a few more albums in his lifetime, and I am not crazy about them.......I know his more rabid fans will jump on me for this, but they just don't do it for me, and i don't have em anyways.....perhaps you could look to Pirate Bay, or maybe a blog friend will check in.......I jut don't find the remainder of his work to be "for Me".......

What I do have is a good live set from Licianatta, 1980, which features a fine version of "Fucking Ada", as well as "Rythm Stick" and "Sex and Drugs", really a good set, haven't seen it around all that much......."Pinkpop Festival 1981" covers a good bit of the same turf, (good version of "Clever Trever")......fans are gonna want these, dabblers may settle for "Do It Yourself".

WHile I'm at it, why not throw on "Stiffs Live", which I've probably posted here somewhere before, but Dury gets a couple tracks here, as well as Nick Lowe, Wreckless Eric, Elvis Costello, et al......

Well that's about all I GOT......hopefully someone from abroad will take interest and contribute some other things.......I was never a HUGE Ian Dury fan, but in small doses DID  find him amusing.....my knowledge of him is pretty lacking as well, although I do know he died a few years back from colorectal cancer (2000, at age 57........RIP)

Ducks DeLuxe

0
0
But a single album today, but a good and fairly scare one, from 1974 the self titled debut from Ducks Deluxe....The Ducks were guitarists Martin Belmont and Sean Tyla, bassist Ken Whaley, and drummer Magic Michael.......some blazing pub-rock, they went through various personnel shifts including Brinsley Scwhartz on vocals........these guys were like a who's who of "future" pub-rock stuff, as there are future members of The Rumour, the Motors, The Tyla Gang and more.......but let us focus on this 1974 gem,

Leading off with the stomping "Coast ot Coast", the whole thing is PURE pub rock, as true a sampling as one could dish out......narly every track goes pretty hard, "Fireball", "West Texas Trucking Board", "Don't Mind Rockin' Tonight"..........slipped by just before the New Wave era or it (along with, say the Motors or Brinsley Schwartz) may have become a bit more well known than they did.

Now, here's a shout out to Doug from Northern Ohio (owner of every piece of vinyl known to man), or even to my UK punk/new wave go-to guy Just Johnny, anyone have a copy of album # "Taxi To the Terminal Zone".....used to be one around here, no idea what happened to it, but can't find it on the web anywhere........really like to complete the set, but this one stands on it's own well enough, enjoy and report back, especially if you can run down a copy of "Taxi!"

Overground's 1980 Punk Compilations

0
0
Spider just sent me this one yesterday, and while I am fairly certain I already have one around here
somewhere, and just to be sure it's available on the Bay, so it's readilly available, BUT it also comprehensive and most enjoyable for what it is supposed to be..........many little known singles here, as well as some demos and I'm sure there's some stuff even punk afficianados may be lacking.......4 discs here, all with the theme of Anarchy! which you will remember was quite the concept in those early 80's......in general and on paper it (anarchy) doesn't really work out all that well, but ohhh, we were all zany, know it all tykes back then. Enjoy this music, as I said, I bet at least SOME of it is new to you, and thanks to Spider for sending it to me as well as thanks to Overground records for comiling this monster.

Volume 1 "Anti War", includes one I've always really enjoyed, Flowers in the Dusbin's "November's Song", as well as notable anti-war numbers such as "The Blood Is On Your Hands" from the Insitagators, Youth-In-Asia's "When the Wind Blows", "Government Lies" by Anti System and a total of twenty three shotgun blasts of pure 1980 punk, just the way it was1

The Second Volume, "Anti-State" is loaded as well, how about "Progress" from A Flux of Pink Indians, "Bully Boys" from the fab Poison Girls, noted anarchists Chumbawumba chip in with "Revolution", and "The Plague" by Synyx.......a fine conceptual piece (as is the entire 4 disc package), strange it isn't better known, at least here in the USA.

Volume 3 "Anti Society", is also loaded with middle-finger flips to the world, Alternative us the strangely titled "Where are Your Hiroshimas?", "Our Gods Are Falling Down By Thatcher on Acid", "Your Military" is presented by Icons of Filth, and "Stop Vivisection Now" from Oi Polloi to cherry pick a few......

Fianlly we have Volume 4, "Anti Capitalism", yet another 20-some blasts of 2:00 minute trashes, to name a few, Slaughter of the Innocents "A Dark New Age",  Conflict's "Mighty and Superior", The Cravats "Xmp", and Kulturkampsf's "We Need No More........

Just my kind of comp......cohesive, not all over the place, tightly consructed, many, many obscure bands, which always leads to unexpected treasures..........you'll like this one, I don't doubt.
