Think I'm getting lazy and deliberately searching out bands that had really short careers? Well, maybe,but history is no question littered with them as well, such as yesterday's Priestess, or, if you prefer, a band from nearly 40 years prior, Jody Grind.Jody Grind released two quite good prog-rock albums in the late 1960's, they were prone to some long instrumental jams, built mostly around the sound of Tim Hinkley's Hammond organ, they also included guitarist Ivan Zagni and drummer Martin Harriman, somewhat reminiscent of the sound of Atomic Rooster (although in my opinion not quite as good), or even Emerson Lake and Palmer (whom they could be better than given ELP's lapses into pretentious tangents that were about as much fun as oral surgery).
The first album "One Step On" contains a useable version of the Stones "Paint It Black", there is lots of instrumental noodling and even some orchestration, it is more of a curiosity than anything you'd want to listen to regularly. After it's release, Hinkley booted the other two members and recruited guitarist Bernie Holland and drummer Pete Galvin in an attempt at a more rocking approach for the album "Far Canal"......it is superior to the debut by a good margin, "Plastic Shit" and "Vegetable Oblivion" are stand-outs, and this album is a keeper for fans of the oddd-ball sounds of pre-punk 1970's Britain.
The niche the carved out was small, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be remembered along with 5000 others that at least got an album out there for us.
