sure if they have an album out or not, or just this single, anyway, I'm waiting on something else to download, so I may as well support ANOTHER band that generously sends their work to the BigMan, which to me is as important as doing career retrospectives on great bands like Sonic Youth, say, or Radio Moscow......it's all music, and it's all to be HEARD, NOT fucking SOLD.......enjoy this, or not, I haven't listened to it yet, but that is how we roll around here.....send it to me, and I WILL get it out there!

Ok, no one can accuse me of slacking, here is one more for today....from 2004, a pretty fair punk album from Authority Zero ("Andiamo")......it's pretty fair, containing the single "Revolution" as well as a rather bizarre cover of Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" with revised lyrics.......anyway, it's pretty good, I listened to it again a couple weeks back and it's not to bad.......enjoy, see ya tomorrow, MAYBE not with as many posts as today, but we shall see....

(scott)-I've posted most of this before (long ago), but of course John N has some material I don't
have.....bad ass-hard psych/stoner rock from Story City Iowa, thus far, I have really enjoyed their releases (haven't heard the latest one), the lineups have changed a bit over the years (between 2007-now) so I wont try to track everyone, I will just say this is the story of a band that started out as a blues/metal duo type and morphed into a sort of retro-70's band with some modern day stoner rock touches.

The band was a hard rocking duo when the self titled debut was released (2007, fun fact: Dan Auerbach produced), honestly a fairly run-of-the-mill hard rock album. Much better is "Brain Cycles" (2009) as the band tries to heavy- and psych-up their sound......it is successful, they were a prefectly legit second-tier mid-late 00's stoner band......there were a LOT of great ones, and these guys were up there. For my cash, "I just Don't Know" is the highlight here, but there are other good ones here. Recommended (by me).

The next album may be the best, "The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz", still plenty hard rocking and psychish-stoner-y......although adding back in some garagey-blues-ish touches. This was, I think, their best effort......it is also where they and I ended association, I guess......until now.

By the release of "Three and Three Quarters, the band was basically multi-instrumentalist Parker Griggs, this album comes off as somewhat experimental on first listen, but still worth having....."Magical Dirt" is a "new" release (2014! Where have I been?)....HAVE NOT HEARD this one yet, of course, I'm putting it up there, my admiration of the band's past work requires that. hope it's a good one......

Thanks to John N we also have "Live in California", which is the ONLY in-concert material I have EVER heard from this great band (ANYONE else got any more?) as well as a handful of non-album tracks....this may be (or maybe not, who the fuck knows?) the "best" Radio Moscow post EVER, except I can't REALLY call it that or that douche over at the blog that doesn't like THIS blog will get all upset.

RADIO MOSCOW is one of the better hard rock practitioners of the last few years, if you are unaware and
missed my first attempt to make this point, this new and improved posting will certainly drive the point home!

(scott) In December of last year, my son Grant and I went to see my favorite band, Sleater Kinney, perform
in Columbus Ohio....the opening act was (the very good, actually) Waxahatchee, with, whom, at that time, I was not familiar......

Flash forward, I have gotten an education and a half on them, with multiple submissions, I had no idea of their depth and influence, really.....here Jon S presents some work from PS Eliot, a Waxahatchee-related project (actually PRE-Waxahatchee if you read his write up).....gotta say haven't yet had time to listen to this one, but REALLY want to, even after enjoying them opening for the great SK, blog submissions have gotten me far more interested in the fab work of twin sisters Katie and Allison Crutchfield........and PS Eliot is their "roots" for certain (Katie went on to form Waxahatchee, Allison formed Swearin' a you can see from Jon S' write up. Anyway, another FANTASTIC submission. I am speechless over the quality of contributions I have been receiving of late. It's what makes this blog readable, in SOME people's eyes.....and, those of you who DISLIKE the blog......well, sorry about your luck, I happen to LIKE how it's been going of late.

Brian's 80's Pop tunes cover project

Here we have it: the pile of 80's covers I told you about. I originally only got about 50 tracks, but with Jonder's help and research, I managed to make it 75. And again, these are all covers of pop songs. That being said, there's quite an eclectic array here.

Many of your Alternative Heroes are inside. The Foo Fighters rip their way through "Kids In America". Weezer's great version of "You Might Think" is from Cars 2. Also in aCARS

vein, the Deftones bring a moody andBEAUTIFUL

cover of "Drive". Sonic Youth show up - in the guise of Ciccone Youth - with a lo-fi, cooing version of Robert Palmer's "Addicted to Love". Yo La Tengo crank up the amps for a runthrough of Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby". Ben Folds does an utterly faithful "Video Killed The Radio Star".

Violent Femmes effectively mutate "Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?". Tori Amos does a great live version of "I Ran". Cobra Starship's cover of "Future's So Bright (I Gotta Wear Shades" is funkier than the original. Juliana Hatfield gets into Guitar Pop Heaven for her cover of "Every Breath You Take". The Mike Patton project Lovage turn Berlin's "Sex (I'm A)" into late night sextronica. Done contemporary to the original, Rowland S. Howard's version of "White Wedding" carries its own sense of drama.

Around the turn of the millenium, it became cool to do power punk covers of 80's tunes. I've spread a smattering of them across the 4 discs. I remember cranking Goldfinger's "99 Red Balloons" while playing Gran Turismo 3. The Ataris'"Boys of Summer" is really good, and was a hit if I remember. I like The Starting Line's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", but then again I've always been a sucker for Mannequin. And bringing back another childhood fave, A Loss For Words tunefully tear through "I Just Called To Say ILOVE

You". And speaking of tearing, Good Riddance's cover of "I Melt With You" is snot-nosed and glorious.

As is wont to happen, some of these songs areCOMPLETELY

transformed. Sapli turn "With or Without You" into a gentle tango. J.W. Jones makes "Cuts Like A Knife" a rollicking blues. Nothing But Thieves turn in a dramatic "Holding Out For A Hero" that would befit a Bond film. The Postal Service make "Against All Odds" into a beautifully nerdy ballad. The Brand New Heavies' version of "Sledgehammer" is pure, grooving funk. Signe Tollefsen's forlorn and icy cover of "Dirty Diana" flips the gender roles, making the song titillating in a different way. Sharon Jones & Dap Kings cover of "What Have You Done For Me Lately?" is barn-burning soul. William Shatner (along with ol' Bootsy) shows up to do his thing on "She Blinded Me With Science".

Reggae only shows up twice, but both are worth it. The Sunshiners' cover of Human League's "Don't You Want Me" is fun, and The Easy Star All Stars' version of MJ's "P.Y.T." is a brilliant groove.

Country, bluegrass, and Appalachia show up now and again. Jimmy LaFave's version of "Missing You" is straight up contemporary country, but I still like it. The Wind + The Wave's cover of "Don't You (Forget About Me)" is hill music of the best kind. Lelia Broussard's "Dancing In The Dark" has some stark country vocals. The DeLorean Sister's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" may be low volume (sorry), but tell me that's not aBEAUTIFUL

melody!

There you go: I've discussed 31 tracks. There are 44 more that I haven't even mentioned! Some are faithful, some are bizarre, but all of them I like. I would encourage you to download and play em, not even looking at the track list. You'll be in for some surprises! I'll also put the link here for the "Metal Covered Eighties" comp if you haven't sipped from that cup of madness yet.

Let's start my weekend posting binge off with a somewhat amusing post, MAYBE you won't find it as amusing as I do, but we need to start someplace.......The Coathangers are a pretty damn good chick-punk/pop combo, I did a post or two about some of their work a while back, probably still available if you are interested (I think they are from the Southeastern USA if I recall, but I don't care enough to look).....anyway, when someone comments on a post, it automatically sends me an e-mail.....now, I DOUBT anyone would see this, if I didn't post it (NO ONE looks at the "old' COMMENTS", so enjoy this, the online "robots''DO provide us some humor now and again:

J.S. Hanger Coat Hangers from Bizarkdeal

Are you hanging your expensive coats on freebie wire hangers that you get from the dry cleaner? Or are you trying to upgrade with the nicest thing they sell at Target? If you want top quality hangers for your top quality clothing, these are an excellent option. They are honestly the best in my closet, and they do a great job of holding heavier items such as my long wool winter coat and thick down jacket.
The hangers themselves are beautifully finished beechwood hangars. The arms of the hanger are rounded over the top, and the finish is completely smooth. Some lower quality wood hangars have rough spots or even exposed joints, but this hangar is smooth and finished well all around to avoid snagging on your nice clothes. The metal hanger on top swivels easily as well.
These are top quality hangers and certainly recommended.

(scott)-This guy ("Anonymous") spoke up in the comments the other day (re: the "big" REM post), stating
that he had another batch of REM boots that weren't included with Jon S' bunch used in that post......he's got several more to come, but his (her?) first contribution comes in the form of two double-disc shows from the Atlanta Omni, November 18/19 1995.....I saw them on this same tour ("Monster") in Indianapolis (either October or November, I forget), which comes with an interesting story that I'll have to share sometime.....I've found setlists for the Atlanta shows BUT I'm just going to copy/paste them, and I DO NOT know where the "break points" between discs are.......you'll figure it out. By the way, the Indy show on that tour (the one I saw) was quite good, and highlighted by the opening act, a then-somewhat lesser known UK band that went by the name of Radiohead.
